JEMAAL ALEXANDER, LMHC, LPC
Jemaal is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor in the State of New York, and an equivalent Licensed Professional Counselor in the State of New Jersey, practicing via telehealth to NY & NJ residents at this time.
Jemaal received his B.A. in Psychology from The City College of New York, followed by a M.S. in Mental Health Counseling from Long Island University and has since culminated years of experience working with an array of individuals from all walks of life.
Many people struggle with mental health concerns yet hesitate to seek the help they need due to stigma, fear, or a lack of guidance on how to receive said services. Another difficult barrier in starting therapy is finding the right therapist that one feels comfortable opening up to. This is an especially trying task that unfortunately has left many unsatisfied and discouraged as they search for someone that fits within their comfort zone. As a psychotherapist, Jemaal's immediate goal is to produce a welcoming therapeutic environment that allows each client to feel fully seen, heard and able to do the work.
Therapy is gradually gaining popularity and acceptance, a beautiful sight indeed; and it's becoming more evident that the therapeutic community desperately needs to meet the needs of the changing and diverse populations now seeking therapy. Throughout his years of practicing, it's become all too clear to Jemaal that the therapeutic community lacks sufficient diversity amongst its clinicians. As a Canadian born immigrant to West Indian parents, Jemaal takes pride in helping make therapy accessible and attractive to communities that seldom devote time to address their mental health concerns. Jemaal is passionate about helping clients obtain their goals and welcomes all who are ready to embark on their journey of mental wellness. Jemaal cherishes the opportunity to be the therapist to others that he wishes he had the opportunity to have growing up and navigating life stressors as a first generation immigrant and young man of color.
Jemaal's personal journey of mental wellness is a holistic one, filled with constant mindfulness based practices and structured self care habits designed to heal and give the recharge necessary to live in accordance of his values and goals. When not practicing therapy, Jemaal can be found on a run, playing soccer in his community, dancing with friends, cooking, laughing at memes or exploring the outdoors with his wife and daughter. Jemaal makes breath-work and mindfulness based exercises a stable in his daily routines as he utilizes the very skills he preaches.
